Union Cabinet gives approval for AIIMS at Gorakhpur

On the third day of Parliament’s monsoon session, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for establishment of a new All India Institute Medical Science (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Approved under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) estimated cost for AIIMS Gorakhpur is of Rs 1,011 crore.

The new AIIMS will have a hospital with capacity of 750 beds, which will include Emergency/Trauma Beds, AYUSH Beds, Private Beds and ICU Speciality & Super Speciality beds. In addition, the hospital will also have night shelter, hostels and residential facilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit at the proposed 112 acres site on July 22, to lay the institute’s foundation stone, during his visit to Gorakhpur.

Under this scheme, similar health facilities have been established in Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Raipur, Jodhpur, Rishikesh and Patna while work on AIIMS, Rae Bareli is in progress.

Three new AIIMS at Nagpur (Maharashtra), Kalyani (West Bengal) and Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh) have been sanctioned last year.

Residents of 14 districts of Eastern UP and five districts of Western Bihar will be benefited by the establishment of new AIIMS.
