Veteran filmmaker-screenwriter Ram Mukherjee, father of Bollywood star Rani Mukerji, passed away on Sunday. He was 84.According to sources, Ram was not keeping well for sometime and died at 5 am today.

Sharing the news of her husband’s demise, Krishna Mukherjee said, “His blood pressure dropped suddenly and he was admitted to Breach Candy hospital where doctors declared him dead at 5 am. He was doing fine earlier and this was sudden.”

His body will be cremated at 2 pm.

Ram Mukherjee

Ram Mukherjee worked in both Hindi and Bengali cinema. He was one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai. He was most known for helming films like Hum Hindustani (1960), which starred Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh in lead roles, and the Dilip Kumar-Vyjayanthimala starrer Leader (1964).

Mukherjee also produced Rani’s debut Hindi film Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat in 1997. He also directed and produced the actor’s Bengali debut movie Biyer Phool (1996), which also starred Prosenjit Chatterjee.
