Teresa May – spelled without the ‘h’ – is getting mistaken for the new Tory leader as Twitter users attempted to congratulate the now former Home Secretary.

Her account was even trending on Twitter after Andrea Leadsom unexpectedly withdrew from the Conservative leadership race just after midday on Monday, leaving Mrs May, the politician, to win the race.

Confusingly, glamour model Ms May’s Twitter handle is @RealTeresaMay, and although her first name is spelled differently, many users did not notice.

She has been so swamped with congratulations and tweets from people interested in UK politics – but evidently not interested enough to spell the next Prime Minister’s name correctly – that she has had to clarify in her biography: “I am a UK Glamour model, not the Prime Minister.”
