Movie: Rustom

The movie is about Rustom (Akshay Kumar), who can’t keep his hands off his wife Cynthia (Ileana D’Cruz), but work commitments send him on a six month trip. The tour finishes before time, and Rustom returns to find Cynthia in the arms of a hot-headed millionaire, Vikram Makhija (Arjan Bajwa). Rustom’s raging anger knows no bounds, and Vikram is killed.

Rustom surrenders himself to the Police immediately and admits to have killed Vikram but pleads ‘not guilty’ in court. This case is to be judged by a jury that comprises of local dignitaries. The society’s idea of infidelity and consenting adults are likely to impact the final outcome.

It is based on the real life of Naval officer K M Nanavati, who in 1959, shot and killed his wife’s lover.

Akshay Kumar is the backbone of Rustom. The plot is interesting if not engaging. Tinu Suresh Desai’s melodramatic direction struggles to maintain momentum. While Ileana is perfectly cast, Esha Gupta’s inappropriate outfits and over-the-top acting evokes laughter.

Despite its multiple flaws, Rustom can be watched for Akshay Kumar. He makes you want to support the man who probably did the right thing the wrong way.
