Highlights of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton second Presidential debate

Trump Clinton

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went head to head in their second live TV debate tonight. Donald’s campaign is in trouble as footage of him using comments about groping and using women emerged. Dozens of senior Republicans have withdrawn their support for Donald Trump after that tape emerged.

As a result Donald Trump gave a press conference tonight, appearing alongside four women who claim they were sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton just hours before the second Presidential debate. In a bizarre last-minute ploy, the Republican candidate sat at a table with the women who have accused his rival’s husband of rape or unwanted advances in St Louis.

Rumours were flying around in last hour or so that Mike Pence, Trump’s running mate might be dropping out. He was said to be “beside himself” with fury over the leaked tape on Friday. And then during the debate Trump somewhat threw his number two under the bus.

The second debate started awkwardly as both the candidates took their places without handshakes.

  • The first question: a schoolteacher complained that the last debate wasn’t really suitable for kids. Are you modelling behaviours that are suitable for today’s youth?Hillary Clinton addressed that briefly – before moving on to her pitch to be the “candidate for all Americans”. While Donald said he agreed with that. He said he started his campaign because he was sick of seeing the things people are doing to the country. “My concept is to make America great again” he added. He listed Obamacare and the Iran nuclear deal as bad deals for the country, before listing law and order, the trade deficit and a whole range of other things, none of which has anything to do with the question.
  • The Locker Room Talk: Trumph when asked about his comments about women, he said that it was “locker room talk.” When asked if he’s ever kissed women without consent, he answered no, further adding “Nobody has more respect for women than me.” While Clinton confronted by saying that Trump has said those comments don’t represent who he is – but the evidence suggest that’s exactly who he is.
  • Donald Trump Tries to Turn Focus to Bill Clinton: Trump was asked whether he has changed as a person since he made those comments. Then after few minutes Trump’s dropped the Bill bomb – claiming Hillary’s husband has not only used offensive words, but has also been physically abusive to women. Hilary Clinton comes back by saying  Trumph is not right. But she says it’s up to him how he runs his campaign – quoting Michelle Obama, who said “when they go low, you go high”.
  • Clinton to be jailed if Trumph wins: Trump says Clinton owes the American people an apology over the emails she deleted and “asset washed” from her server. He says he would appoint a special prosecutor to go after Hillary about her emails. Hillary says it’s a good thing someone with the “temperament” of Mr Trump isn’t in charge of the US legal system. Trump says “…because you’d be in jail.” Clinton says there’s no evidence that her email server was hacked – and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.Trump comes back to say Clinton is “lying again” – and she should be “ashamed” of herself for deleting 39,000 emails, which she said were personal emails.
  • About Islamophobia: Trump says “You’re right about Islamophobia, and that’s a shame” – but “there’s a problem”, and we can be politically correct if we want, but we have to accept that there’s a problem. He lists a bunch of terror incidents, which he says were committed by “radical islamic terrorists” – adding that Clinton won’t even say the name. “Before you solve it, you’ve got to say the name.” While Clinton says Muslims have been in America since George Washington, and it’s dangerous for Donald to be using the divisive language he’s using. “We need American Mulsims to be our eyes and ears”.Clinton says “We are not at war with Islam – I want people like [the audience member] to feel as welcome here as anyone else.”She says what he says was extremely unwise and potentially dangerous – adding that many terrorist websites have used his comments as a recruiting tool.Donald says we’re letting people into this country that are going to cause “crime like we’ve never seen.”
  • How will the candidates make sure the wealthy pay their fare share of tax?: Donald admits that he’s taken advantage of the tax code – but the reason Hillary didn’t change it while she was a Senator is that all her friends did too. He says he’s getting rid of “carried interest” rules which only help people like him – but he’s cutting taxes on corporations from 38% to 15%. He says “Hillary Clinton’s putting up your taxes, folks. I’m lowering your taxes.”Clinton says that it’s a bit rich for someone who may not have paid taxes for 20 years to talk about taxes. Clinton says she won’t increase taxes on anyone who earns less than $250,000 a year – and insists that as a Senator she did vote to close tax loopholes for wealthy people. She says it’s wrong that “people like Donald” have got away with paying no taxes for so long.
  • To handle Syria: Clinton says the situation in Syria is “catastrophic.” There’s a “determined effort” she says, by the Russian air force, to destroy Aleppo, wiping out the rebels and ensuring the survival of the Assad regime.Donald says Clinton talks tough, but the US has allowed their nuclear arsenal to go out of date. And he says Clinton speaks in support of the rebels – and “she doesn’t even know who they are.” He says “I don’t like Assad at all, but Assad is killing ISIS. Russia is killing ISIS.”
  • Devoted president for all the people: Donald says he would be a president for all the people, unlike Clinton who described his supporters as “deplorables.” He says Clinton has talked a lot about helping African Americans, Latinos and Hispanics and the inner cities – but it’s all talk, “nothing’s going to happen.” Clinton says she has tried her entire life to do what she can to support children and families. She says she’s proud of the 30 years she’s spent in public service. She says she has a “deep devotion” to letting every American know they have a place in this country. And she worries that some people feel like they don’t have a place in Donald’s America.
  • Energy policy: Trump says we’re killing the energy industries in this country. He’s “all for” alternative forms of energy, but they’re not enough. He says we’re putting our energy companies out of business and it’s killing other industries too, including the steel industry.Clinton says the Chinese are illegally dumping steel in the US, and Trump’s companies are buying it to build their buildings. She says we’re now energy independent and we need to remain so – it’s better than having to worry about what’s going on in the Middle East all the time. She says the US could be the 21st century clean energy super-power.
  • Lastly say something positive in the other candidate: Clinton picks Trump’s children, who are all very able – which says a lot about their father. But she says we need to understand what’s at stake here – you’re picking a president who’s going to be making decisions that will have an effect beyond the next 4 or 8 years. Donald says he considers what Hillary said about his children a compliment. And he goes on to say the thing he admires most in Clinton is that she’s not a quitter. She never gives up, and he respects that.
