35-year-old Rudresh R, an RSS activist and a BJP member from Shivajinagar was hacked to death by two men on the busy Kamaraj Road near Commercial Street on Sunday morning.
Rudresh R, mandal president of the Shivajinagar shakha of the RSS and secretary of the BJP Shivajinagar, was returning on his bike after participating in a ‘patha sanchalana’ (route march) in the vicinity of RBANMS Grounds.
He stopped his bike around 11.30am in front of a photocopying shop next to Radhakrishna temple on Kamaraj Road and was talking to three of his friends — Kumar, Hari and Jairam — when two men on a black Pulsar bike attacked him.
Rudresh was immediately put into an autorickshaw and rushed to Bowring Hospital where he was declared brought dead. A real estate agent, Rudresh was also into milk business. He was a resident of Milkmans Colony in Shivajinagar.
Soon over 200 RSS activists descended in front of the Commercial Road police station and staged an impromptu protest. They demanded the arrest of Rudresh’s killers. They blocked Commercial Road for over an hour, causing a huge traffic jam on the premier shopping avenue.
Over 1,000 policemen and RAF personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
City Police Commissioner N.S. Megharikh has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Shivajinagar, Commercial Street, Bharathinagar and Pulikeshinagar.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the assailants had not covered their faces and their bike had no number plate. Kumar and Jayaram tried to catch the attackers and even pelted stones at them, but they soon vanished.
Rudresh was also into real estate business and is survived by wife and two children.
RSS members have threatened to go on state wide bandh if the police fails to arrest the attackers by 8 pm on Monday.
