14 coaches of a Patna-Indore Express derailed near Pukharayam in Kanpur in the early hours on Sunday. According to the latest reports, at least 45 people have lost their lives after the train accident. The train is reported to have derailed around 5 in the morning. Medical teams have been rushed to the site of the accident to attend to the injured.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has directed the DGP to personally monitor the relief operations from the spot. “All hospitals in neighboring districts are activated. Private hospitals of Kanpur are put on alert to accommodate patients,” he said. He has instructed the Principal Secretary Health to ensure there is no shortage of medicines and blood for treatment of patients.
The death toll is likely to increase.
The officials are expecting the death toll to rise as the rescue operations are on the way. “14 coaches of Indore-Patna exp derailed near Kanpur. We are yet to confirm the total number of casualties. Rescue operations are underway,” Anil Saxena, Indian Railways spokesperson said.
He also said that he is taking immediate measures to take measure of the situation. “Senior officials and medical team have been rushed to the spot; we are in contact with district officials,” he said.
Meanwhile, The Indian Railways has listed the coach numbers which were derailed. “14 coaches which derailed are Seating cum Luggage Rake,GS,GS,A1,B1/2/3,BE,S1/2/3/4/5/6,” the Indian Railways said.
PM Narendra Modi said,”Anguished beyond words on loss of lives due to the derailing of Patna-Indore express. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Have spoken to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, who is personally monitoring the situation closely”.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said,”Deeply pained by loss of lives caused by derailment of Patna- Indore Express near Kanpur. My thoughts are with bereaved families”.
After the accident, several trains scheduled to take the same route have now been diverted. Jhansi-Lucknow Intercity, Jhansi-Kanpur passenger train cancelled. Train no 12542,12522,12541,12534 diverted.
