The Chandigarh stalking case, in which the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala is an accused, is becoming controversial by the moment with a party leader from the state now questioning what the victim was doing out so late at night.

Mystery remains over why Chandigarh Police dropped two non-bailable Indian Penal Code sections, which Vikas Balara and his friend Ashish Kumar were charged under. Today, it emerged that CCTV footage from areas where the alleged crime occurred is missing.

Meanwhile, the victim Varnika Kundu and her IAS officer father Virender have vowed to fight for justice, saying that they will not bow down under any pressure.

Chandigarh stalking: Heated exchanges in RS, Selja says it's ‘beta bachao’ in Haryana Kumari Selja

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed heated exchanges between the government and the Opposition over whether to take up legislative business or debate issues like Chandigarh stalking case and printing of differently-sized new currency notes.Leading the Congress attack was Haryana leader Kumari Selja who also said the BJP-led Haryana government was all about “beta bachao and not beti bacaho”.While the government wanted to push the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill for consideration and passage, the Congress-led opposition members continued to press for discussions on the two issues.Consensus eluded even after the leaders of the two sides met in the presence of Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien to break the prevailing deadlock in the House.Union Ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Ravi Shankar Prasad, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh and Kumari Selja were among those who attended the meeting.Prasad repeatedly stressed that the Banking Regulation Bill was “very important and pro-poor” and would empower the RBI to ask banks to initiate proceedings against bad loans. However, unrelenting opposition members stuck to their stand on discussing the two contentious issues first and then taking up the legislative business. Led by the Congress, Opposition members also trooped into the Well, raising anti-government slogans.Congress deputy leader Anand Sharma said Chandigarh being a Union Territory was directly administered by the Home Minister who should come to the House and give a statement on the issue.Selja accused the Haryana government of “protecting the accused in the case and trying to push matter under the carpet”. “It is all about beta bachao in Haryana, there is no beti bachao. It is matter related to the Haryana BJP chief so there is this attempt to cover up. Why did the police not conduct the blood and the urine tests, why have they not added the kidnapping section?  We fear there is an attempt to cover up by the Chandigarh Administration. Because it comes directly under the Central Government, attempts are being made to dilute the case,” she said.Earlier, while participating in a special discussion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Quit India Movement, DMK’s Kanimozi also made a mention of the Chandigarh stalking case to make her point about the situation of women in India despite so many years of Independence.
