Every year, the birth of Lord Krishna – Janmashtami – is celebrated with much fervour across the country. It is also celebrated world wide in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Fiji, USA, Caribbean Islands, etc. A lot of credit goes to International Society for Krishna Consciousness, popularly known as ISKCON.Many devotees observe day-long fasts on the occasion, chant mantras, and sings bhajans that praise him.

Till now, it is speculated that Janmashtami of 2017 will fall on 14th August but as per ISKCON calendar the Janmashtami is 15th August 2017 because they are purists who would consider the birth moment of Lord Krishna as the Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. And that would fall at midnight hours of 14th August 2017.

 

Pooja Rituals

Devotees of Lord Krishna observe a ritualistic fast during his birth anniversary. Devotees eat only a single meal a day before Janmashtami. On the fasting day, devotees take a Sankalpa to observe a day long fast and to break it on the next day when the Ashtami Tithi is over. They perform the Krishna Abhishekam, with milk, ghee and water, and proceed to offer ‘bhog’ to the God. Through the day of fasting no grains are consumed, the devotees take a meal containing fruits and water, called ‘Phallar‘.
