The income disclosures made by 7 Lok Sabha members and 98 MLAs are under scanner and has been taken up for further investigation, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had informed the Supreme Court on Monday. “The prima facie verification with known sources of income has indicated discrepancy and therefore is taken up for further investigation which may include reference to the assessing officer for making assessment,” the CBDT said in its affidavit filed before a Bench of Justices J Chelameswar and S Abdul Nazeer. The bench was hearing a PIL on electoral reforms, according to Indian Express report.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members:

The PIL, which filed by an NGO, had listed 26 Lok Sabha members, 11 Rajya Sabha members and 257 MLAs and asked for a scrutiny of the income growth of them. Replies received in the case of 26 LS members, 2 RS members and 215 MLAs. The verification reports of nine RS members and 42 MLAs are pending, according to Indian Express report.

The CBDT also said that the names of these politicians cannot  revealed and would given to the court in a sealed cover for its perusal. It said the income tax department has inquired into these allegations and “have prima facie found” that there was huge increase of assets in case of these lawmakers and the matter would be probed further. However, the CBDT said verification report by the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) regarding the affidavits filed by these politicians cannot be provided under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and filed in the court in a sealed cover for the perusual of the bench.
