A simple police action conducted within the limits of duty turned into Ramganj police’s worst nightmare late on Friday night when stone pelting occurred at the station and few police officials were injured, a chetak patrol jeep and a 108 ambulance were damaged and set ablaze. This vandalism happened after a cop allegedly hit a woman with a stick.

On Friday night , a cop while discharging his duty under section 60 of Police Act (punishment of certain offences on road) detained a youth from Ramganj. Though the youth would have let go off after completing the legal necessities, the youth’s family also reached the police station.

The cop tried to carry out his duty but faced difficulty owing to pressure exerted by the family and misbehavior by the youth . “The youth started misbehaving with the cop and one female relative of the youth also started verbal attack at the cop. The family even tried to manhandle . H owever in the ensuing confusion , a stick carried by the cop allegedly hit the woman. The family went out of the station and within minutes amassed a huge crowd alleging that the cops hit them”, officials said.

However little did the cops knew what the gathering had in mind. “Suddenly stone pelting started as one after the other stones were hurled by the crowd at the police station causing damage. However the crowd turned more violent as they then damaged the chetak jeep and set ablaze the 108 ambulance parked at the station” , officials said. Police force from nearby police stations had already called to the spot but it proved inadequate to handle the violent crowd.

While the crowd continued to pelt stones, senior officials informed about the situation. “Everything happened within minutes. Immediately senior officials reached the spot and ordered that shots fired in air to disperse the crowd. Meanwhile p olice force from reserve police lines also reached the spot. The police then sprung to action and took control of the law and order by use of force” , officials said.

Situation continued to remain tensed even around midnight.
