Cauvery Row: Karnataka in quagmire, reservoirs are dried up

Cauvery Row

The Supreme Court ordered Karnataka on Tuesday to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu till Friday. The legislature’s resolution that water should be released only for Bengaluru’s drinking needs didn’t find favour with it. The order comes despite the state counsel clearly stating that there is hardly any water in the reservoirs for the state to release

The CM is holding an all-party meeting today and is hoping to get everyone on board over the Cauvery issue. Going by the previous all-party meeting, it is likely that all parties may once again ask the Karnataka government to stick to its original stand of not releasing water.

The SC will resume its hearing on Friday. The state will have to present its case once again before the apex court while Tamil Nadu may demand that a ‘contempt of court’ action be taken up against Karnataka for failing to adhere to SC’s earlier ruling.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been silent on the Cauvery issue. Now, with the SC asking Centre to hold a meeting with the chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Modi may be forced to intervene. This meeting, to be chaired by Bharti, will take place on September 29 and Jayalalithaa, who is unwell, has deputed public works minister EK Palaniswamy for the talks.
