Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Ambani said that Jio had enlisted 100 million customers on its network in just 170 days since launching on September 5 last year, on an average signing up seven customers every second. Jio’s Welcome and Happy New Year offers had offered a free voice calling and 1GB of free data to daily, attracting massive interest from smartphone users.
While the Welcome offer ended in December, the Happy New Year offer is to set to expire on March 31. Calling data the oxygen of digital life, Ambani said it was Jio’s mission to make it available and affordable to all Indians.
He said that from April 1, Jio will offer tariff plans. While promising that voice calls to any network and any city will always remain free, he said that Jio will monitor data plans from other telecom operators and guarantee 20% more data.
He announced a custom-made programme called Jio Prime, where subscribers who sign up on or before March 31 can become members for a one-time fee of Rs 99. As part of the programme, existing subscribers can avail of free voice services and 1GB of free 4G data daily for Rs 303 per month till March 31, 2018. He said that more attractive deals and offers for Jio Prime members in the pipeline.
He said that before Jio’s launch, India ranked 150th in the world in broadband penetration, but had now become the no.1 country in the world for mobile data usage as Indians made 200 crore minutes of voice and video calls every day. Ambani said that by the end of 2017, Jio will have a presence in nearly every corner of the country and would cover 99% of the population.
