Formula one driver Jenson Button was rushed to Mannheim hospital for an eye examination. But less than an hour later, Button tweeted: ‘On my way back to Hockenheim from the Mannheim hospital for an eye examination, foreign body found and removed. All good for tomorrow.’

The British driver said he felt a “very painful” irritation in his eye while he was driving his McLaren Honda car during Friday afternoon’s second free practice session. Carbon particle was found and removed.

The 2009 world champion British enjoyed a solid day’s running in Germany, finishing both sessions in eighth, completing 16 laps in the afternoon. Button ended the session eighth quickest, 1.473 seconds adrift of German Nico Rosberg of Mercedes, but 0.138sec ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso who was 10th.

The Formula one German Grand Prix race will start at 1pm on Sunday, with build-up underway at 11:30am.
