NEW DELHI: As one in three children in India are stunted, the Niti Aayog has come out with a national strategy to fight maternal and child malnutrition and anaemia among women and girls.
The focus is on 100 poor performing districts in terms of stunting of which 29 are in UP. Recognising that India pays an income penalty of 9-10% due to a workforce stunted during childhood, the national nutrition strategy aims to bring nutrition to the centrestage of the National Development Agenda and has outlined a vision of Khuposhan Mukt Bharat (Malnutrition Free India), reducing all forms of malnutrition by 2030.

To achieve the vision, the strategy has outlined monitorable targets such as reducing the percentage of underweight children below 5 years from 35.7% to 20.7% by 2022. It also aims to reduce the prevalence of anaemia in children (6-59 months) from 58.4% to 19.5% and in women and girls from 53.1% to 17.7% in 5 years.

Niti Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar said the strategy of great significance “considering one in three children in India stunted”. Releasing the document, eminent agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan said it was important to have a nutrition strategy based on life-cycle approach that takes into account nutrition needs from birth to death. Calling for linking of agriculture and nutrition, he said, “Agriculture provides answers to most nutrition problems… The challenge is how do you marry the two.” The strategy envisages a framework where the four determinants of nutrition — uptake of health services, food, drinking water and sanitation and income and livelihoods — work together to accelerate decline of undernutrition in India. The strategy talks of a Kuposhan Mukt Bharat — linked to Swachh Bharat and Swasth Bharat.
