In an IPL auction, where fast bowlers who can bowl with pace and fire were the first to be targeted by the franchises, it is indeed surprising that Malinga remained unsold.

Malinga had picked up 154 wickets in 110 matches in the IPL at a strike rate of 16.6 and an average of 19.01. He carried the Mumbai Indians to the final in 2010 and was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011 edition of the tournament.

Jaydev Unadkat was the show stopper on day 2 of the Indian Premier League auction after he was purchased for Rs 11.5 crore by Rajasthan Royals, making him the most expensive Indian bowler ever. Andrew Tye was the next big buy with Rs 7.2 crore by Kings XI Punjab. However, Chris Gayle was third time lucky with a Rs 2 crore bid by Kings XI Punjab.
