Activists of Kerala Students Union, the student wing of Congress and DYFI, the youth wing of ruling CPI(M) clashed here today and police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse them.
Police said trouble started late in the evening when KSU activists taking part in a rally as part of the state KSU convention allegedly destroyed flag posts of CPI(M).
Later in the evening, DYFI activists barged into the venue of the ‘Samara Kahalam’ programme organised by the KSU at Carnival Ground at Mullackal. A pitched battled followed, leaving some KSU activists injured.
The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the warring activists.
A few buses carrying KSU workers were pelted with stones. Later, the violence spread to other parts of the town.
The CPI(M) alleged that their area committee office had been attacked by the KSU activists.
“Several police personnel were injured in the violence. The vehicle of Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, was also damaged,” said, Dy.SP P.V. Baby, adding that the situation was brought under control.
Both the CPI(M) and Congress called for hartal in Alappuzha town till noon on Sunday.
